I See Mee, ceramic, beads, mixed media, by Sana Musasama
Currently on display in Brooklyn at Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York, Musasama’s show I Never Played With Dolls features two bodies of work. The “I See Me” dolls reimagine a doll the artist’s mother made when she was a child to help her appreciate her own hair, and the Topsy Turvy dolls, which examine the Antebellum-era dolls that typically portrayed an African head and torso fused at the waist with a European head and torso, along with a long skirt that will hide one side or the other. In Musasama’s version, the pairings include Nina Simone with Winnie Mandela, Rosa Parks with Elizabeth Jennings, Condoleezza Rice with Monica Lewinksy, and more.
